Mathematics

Led by Mr Parr

Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

At Kingsdown and Ringwould, we aim to inspire a love of maths!  We strive to provide children with a set of tools: reasoning, problem solving and the ability to think outside the box, to help them achieve a broad and deep understanding. Our curriculum ensures progression through each year group and builds on secure foundations learnt previously. We embrace the three elements of maths: fluency, problem solving and reasoning and allow our pupils opportunities for collaboration to deepen understanding.  We develop pupils’ mathematical fluency by ensuring their conceptual understanding and rapid and accurate recall of facts as well as ensuring they are confident in understanding the relationships between number facts.

As suggested by our nurture principles, we understand that all children are developmentally at different stages in their learning journey and learn in different ways. We structure our lessons so that all learning styles are catered for and all children are supported in a way that most suits their needs and are suitably challenged.

We recognise that maths is essential in everyday life and we aim to equip children with a strong mathematical understanding to help prepare them for their future. Children leave our school as confident mathematicians, with embedded Thinking Tools at their disposal, ready to work effectively in their community.

Maths

'I enjoy maths most when it is hard and challenging because because helps me become a better mathematician. I like to learn when I don't already know the answer. It's great that I can help others to learn and solve problems.' - Gabriela Y4

'We are really good at helping each other. We become mini-teachers, helping other kids to understand.  I love doing tests and they are fun because I can test my knowledge and I like getting the results.' - Henry

'If we need help, we ask each other for a little hint or explanation to get us on our way.  Our teacher is really kind and helps us all if we need it. She makes fun ways of teaching of us. My favourite types of activities are when we do maths outside (especially in the summer!)'. - Gisele

'I like when you use maths in other lessons. We had to do lots of measuring when we were baking. My maths skills helped me succeed.' - Sam
